Vivo Z1 Pro quick review

Vivo Z1 Pro quick review

Vivo already has its army of smartphones in the sub-Rs 20,000 segment and you can find a new one at every Rs 2,000 price gap. The recently launched Z1 Pro is not just the new commander of the ‘Z’ series fleet but is also aiming to give competitors sweats. The Vivo Z1 Pro starts at Rs 14,990 and goes up to Rs 16,990 and Rs 17,990 for the maxed out version. This new series is being pitched by the Chinese smartphone maker as a ‘Youth’ centric smartphone series that has affordable offerings and is feature-rich, which is what every other handset maker is claiming these days with its sub Rs-20,000 smartphone. So the question is what's different with Vivo Z1 Pro? We tried to find it out by spending some time with the handset’s Sonic Blue colour variant.

Vivo thinks it’s the best idea to stick with the glossy design and dual gradient look, which reminds us of Huawei and Honor-branded smartphones. It’s nothing that you haven’t seen before. Even the Sonic Black colour variant fails to excite. The smartphone is also fairly thick and bulky but has that required grip so it doesn’t slip out of your hands. In addition to Face unlock there’s a physical fingerprint sensor at the back, on which the finger falls naturally without you struggling much to find it. We will talk more about the design and look in the review. For now, there’s a mixed feeling about it.

Display is where Vivo has been doing well. Having used the Nex, V15 Pro and other smartphones, we can say that delivering a full-screen, no-notch experience is way better in Vivo handsets, especially while playing games. The Z1 Pro doesn’t have a notch but instead has a punch hole cutout on the top left corner of the display. That’s still fine and shouldn’t be a massive distraction as such. It has a 6.5-inch screen with FHD+ (2340x1080 pixels) IPS display and should be a good canvas to play games and view videos.

It’s too early to talk about the processing power of the smartphone and you would have to wait for the review for that. However, we can at least talk about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 processor, which also makes the Z1 Pro first in India to work on this SoC. You won’t notice much difference here and everything should work as it does on any other handset. Also, you get either 4GB or 6GB RAM options with the handset, both of which are enough for casual gaming and streaming videos, which Vivo thinks what most of the ‘Youth’ does. And that seems fair enough for now.

And since it’s a smartphone made for the young audience, a good camera is a must. In our limited time spent with the smartphone, we found the camera well performing but nothing that would blow our minds. The smartphone has three rear cameras including a 16MP primary sensor with f/1.7 aperture, 8MP wide angle lens and a 2MP depth sensor to get those portrait shots right. There’s HDR mode as well and a 32MP front camera that we hope is a good one considering its a ‘youth’ oriented smartphone and taking selfies is what they like to do. More will be talked about in the review.

As for the battery, the smartphone has a 5000mAh power backup that sounds impressive on paper and will likely be equally well performing in real life usage. Vivo already has smartphones in the market with 5000mAh battery so this is nothing new but it surely will be one of the welcome additions for potential customers.
Since Vivo Z1 Pro is aimed at Gen-Z, it has rightfully given more weight to certain features such as the 32MP front-facing camera, 5000mAh battery, display and the processor. But is this all theoretical or actually the case in real life use? Stay with All World Tech to find out in the upcoming review.
